Mines Labriola Innovation Hub
The Labriola Innovation Hub serves as a cornerstone for entrepreneurship and innovation at Colorado School of Mines. The 37,000-square-foot facility is designed for hands-on learning and cross-disciplinary collaboration.
OZ Architecture required imagery that would showcase their expertise in educational design, creating a definitive visual record of the innovation hub’s diverse spaces—from collaboration areas to specialized labs—while capturing both technical capability and the collaborative spirit of the environment.
Challenges
Even during weekend photography sessions, the facility remained active with students. Anyone recognizable in the images required signed model releases, adding an additional layer of coordination.
The dynamic nature of the space also presented challenges in maintaining visual clarity while preserving the authentic atmosphere of an active learning environment.
Solutions
We adapted our approach to work harmoniously within the active environment, relying on available light rather than intrusive studio setups to capture the space’s spontaneous energy.
Subtle adjustments to furniture and selective removal of clutter helped maintain visual clarity while preserving the authenticity of the learning environment. A structured process for obtaining model releases ensured compliance while allowing genuine student interaction to remain part of the imagery.
Outcome
OZ Architecture was particularly pleased with how the imagery conveyed both the technical capabilities and vibrant student life within the space. The photographs successfully captured the design intent behind a dynamic, hands-on learning environment.
