Modern New Build
Tomlinson Designs returned to us for a comprehensive photography project documenting their latest new build—a modern residence in Fort Collins, Colorado. The project required a full day dedicated to capturing the home's interiors, followed by an additional evening session to photograph the exterior during optimal golden hour light.
The home showcases a sophisticated modern design palette anchored by natural white oak cabinetry and trim throughout, complemented by distinctive material choices including textured tile floors in charcoal tones, handcrafted glazed tile in soft sage green, classic white zellige tile backsplashes, and custom colored cabinetry in soft blush pink.
Our goal was to create a versatile image collection that honored these carefully selected finishes while demonstrating both the design's refined aesthetic and its practical functionality. The homeowners were instrumental partners throughout the shoot, helping us expertly stage the spaces and ensuring the home was photography-ready upon our arrival—a collaboration that allowed us to focus entirely on capturing the design at its best.
Challenges
The primary challenge was Colorado's unpredictable weather. Throughout the day-long interior shoot, natural light conditions shifted dramatically— moving from bright sunshine to overcast skies and back again. This inconsistency threatened both the visual cohesion of the final image set and, more critically, the accurate representation of the home's carefully selected materials and finishes. The natural variations in white oak tones, the subtle glazing on sage green tiles, the handmade character of zellige backsplashes, and the soft warmth of blush cabinetry all required precise, consistent color rendering to showcase the design intent.
Solutions
Rather than relying solely on available light—a common approach that leaves photographers at the mercy of weather and time of day— we took full control of the lighting environment. Using professional lighting equipment, we were able to simulate consistent, warm sunshine even when clouds rolled in, ensuring visual continuity across all interior images while preserving the authentic warmth of natural materials. This approach was essential for accurately capturing the home's rich material palette. For the functional shots, we carefully composed before-and-after pairs showing doors open and closed, lights on and off, creating engaging content perfect for animated GIFs on social media.
Outcome
By maintaining consistent lighting quality throughout the interior shoot despite changing weather conditions, we delivered a cohesive visual story that authentically represents the home's atmosphere while highlighting the material selections, craftsmanship, and thoughtful design that define Tomlinson Designs. The homeowners' dedication to preparing their home for photography ensured that every space was presented at its finest, resulting in images that capture not just the architecture and design, but the warmth and livability that make this house a home.
